  • Saint Loup (383-478), a bishop of Troyes, saved the city in 451 from pillaging by the hordes ofBeaux ArtsAttila, who was the monarch of the Huns. The former abbey built in the bishop’s honour was destroyed around 887 by the invading Normans. It was rebuilt on its present site in the 17th and 18th c. and then enlarged in the 19th and 20th c.

The Saint-Loup Museum is an encyclopaedic museum that houses a wide variety of collections, such as fine arts (painting, sculpture and furniture), archaeology and natural history.

Masterpieces of French painting from the 14th to the 19th c. (Champaigne, Létin, École de Barbizon, Tassel, Mignard, Natoire, Watteau and Greuze) can be seen alongside paintings by european artists such as Spranger, Vasari, Rubens and Bellotto.

    Sculpture
In sculpture, the medieval period is represented by rare pieces from the cathedral as well as the churches of Troyes and its area.
From the 17th to the 19th c., the great masters of Troyes are represented: Girardon, a sculptor of Louis XIV, whose Bust of the Sun King is on display, and Dubois and Simart, whose studio works is held by the Museum.
Three bronze sculptures, copies of the Museum’s originals, can be admired at the nearby place Saint-Nizier.

    Archaelology
In archaeology, antiquities from ancient Greece and Egypt rub shoulders with regional pieces, such as the Pouan Treasure, a prestigious ensemble of arms and jewels in gold or garnet from the era of the Invasions, Vaupoisson Apollo (one of the most beautiful Gallo-Roman bronzes discovered in France), and the monetary treasure of the Gallo-Roman villa of Chaillouet, among others.

    Natural History
The Museum of Natural History has on display fossils, a rich collection of meteorites and naturalized animals in dioramas of their natural environment, which are highly appreciated by young visitors.
