What is “sightjogging”?

As its name suggests, the term is a portmanteau of the words “sight” and “jogging”. There is also an alternative form, “sightbiking”, which is a portmanteau of the words “sight” and “biking”.

This new type of tourism first emerged in Italy back in 2005. It was the brainchild of Carolina Gasparetto, a Rome-based sports coach with a degree in languages who wanted to combine her passions for her native city, sport and meeting other people.

Sightjogging was initially reserved for business travellers, before subsequently gaining popularity among other groups of people with a basic level of fitness who wanted to try out something new.

From its humble beginnings, sightjogging is now a popular activity in major tourist cities in France and throughout Europe (Paris, Lyon, Rome, Berlin, Dresden, Barcelona and now Troyes).

Sightjogging has a range of benefits:

It’s a faster way to get around, allowing you to explore more sites and take in more of the city, over a time frame that is similar (or even shorter) than a “traditional” guided tour.

What’s more, there are various different routes that are ideally suited to joggers. It’s also a chance to get to know new people, and enjoy some chilled drinks, chocolate, “spiced bread” and raisins on arrival.
